If you own a home you’re at some point going to become dissatisfied with it. Little things will niggle away at you until you just can’t ignore them anymore. But then what do you do? If it’s the home in general that you’re not feeling too happy with then you can’t just up and move. Well, you can, it’s just going to be a lot more expensive than the other two options. Which leads us to the question of decorating or renovating. Both have their pros and cons, both can be equally as successful or unsuccessful as the other. Either way, this article will explore the pros and cons of both. Hopefully, by the end of it, you’ll have a sound idea of what to do.
Renovate
Renovating is the more expensive option of the two, instant con. But it does come with its fair share of positives. Renovating can completely transform the look of your home, as well as add a hell of a lot of value. Depending on what renovation you’re going to have will determine how much you’re going to need. But, renovating is a big hassle, and it is a lot of mess. If you’re having the kitchen done you’ll definitely find yourself doing your washing up in the shower or bath. If you’re having your bedroom done you’re going to need to sleep somewhere else for the time being. It might also be worth putting your bed etc. into storage for the time being. It’ll only get in the way if left at home. Some people go for a full extension, either to add a conservatory, another room, bathroom etc. Other people chose to renovate a single room. The thing owning your own home is that eventually, it will become slightly outdated. It’s hard to keep up with the times, not only because you don’t have time, but because it’s expensive to keep updating every room. But having a modern kitchen fitted can add thousands to the estimated price of your house if you were looking to sell in the future.
Decorate
Decorating has just as many pros and cons as renovating. Its first pro is the fact that it is much cheaper. If you’re just decorating you generally don’t need to do that much in order to transform a room. A splash of paint here or some fresh furniture there and you can class yourself as a pro decorator. One con, however, is finding the time to do it. A lot of people can’t schedule it in around work and other commitments, so maybe hiring a professional is for the best. A lot of people will have partners who think they’re the king of decorating. This is also just as bad, mistakes will be made, arguments will happen, and prides will be hurt. It can also be a nightmare in terms of picking what you want from the store when you’re buying new paints etc. It’s also hard to decide which room to do first. Typically it is the downstairs so all your guests can be impressed.
