6 awesome ways to spend your gap year

6 awesome ways to spend your gap year

Read in English only

A gap year is a great way to learn, grow, and experience the world. There are many opportunities for people who have the time and money to take a gap year. Here are six awesome ways to spend your time.

Work on a cruise ship

The cruise ship industry is a big part of the tourist industry and it is a great way to explore the world. You can get skilled and unskilled labour jobs that will allow you to make money and visit all of the ports that the ship docks at. Pick a ship with the most exciting routes and immerse yourself in the culture of the sea.

Teaching English

Teaching English is a great way to see the world and learn more about the culture of a place. There are different options throughout the world and you can earn money or volunteer your time. Some schools require a university degree, whereas others don’t, so make sure you do the research before you travel. There are opportunities for teaching English in Africa, Asia, Europe, South America, and Central America.

Being an au pair

Being an au pair is a great way to live with a family in a foreign country and experience the local life. You get free room and board and pocket money in exchange for working on domestic duties like taking care of children and household chores. You can expect to work between 40 and 50 hours a week and you will have the rest of the time to explore the area on your own.

Work as a gaucho in Argentina

Gaucho is the term for cowboy in Argentina and if you can ride a horse you can help herd cattle, and do other chores on ranches. A certain amount of time commitment is required so make sure that you are willing to stay in one place for a while. Some ranches pay but many just provide free room and board to people who are interested in living the gaucho life.

Work with bears in Romania

There is a bear sanctuary in the Carpathian foothills just outside the city of Brasov. The bears have been rescued from terrible living conditions like working for circuses, living in chains, and being crammed into small boxes. This is a great opportunity for people who love animals and wish to make a difference. You can help prepare meals, and monitor the bears’ social interaction with other rehabilitated animals. Brasov is less than three hours by train from the capital city of Bucharest that has plenty of international flights.

Exploring Cuba

Cuba is a fascinating place to spend a gap year. Havana, the capital city, is filled with fabulous cafes, restaurants, classic cars, and beautiful Spanish colonial architecture. Trinidad is a historical city that has cobble stone streets and is rich in historic architecture. Learn more about cigar making by exploring Viñales National Park. Cuba has a stunning coastline and there are many great areas for fishing, diving, snorkelling, and swimming. Make sure you have enough money before going as it can be difficult for foreigners to find work here.
