Ever since seeing my first peacock chair I knew I had to have one. These chairs are literally the most beautiful piece of furniture known to man (me, specifically) and if you own one your life is oficially complete. When I moved to Prague I thought that my peacock dream was dead. These chairs are SO hard to find in this country. I mean it’s virtually impossible to find one here – it’s all ugly sofas here or whatever they are currently selling in IKEA. I was just about to give up on all hope when I came across the most stunning rattan almost peacock chair – isn’t she a beaut?
What is a peacock chair?
A peacock chair is a rattan or a wicker chair with large backrest resembling a fanned out peacock’s tail. Mine lacks this a little but the foundations and the overall design of it are very much inspired by the infamous peacock style that I have no remorse over it. These chairs came to the US in the early 20th century from the Phillipines and had quickly become somewhat of a cult Holywood photo prop for celebrities. Only the coolest got to sit in a peacock chair – there are photos of icons such as Al Green, Brigitte Bardot, Diana Ross, Elizabeth Taylor and even Truman Capot casually sat on a chair like this – which later flew around the world on the front pages of the People, the Forbes and many other well known publications. In the last few years this cool hipster chair earned a well deserved revival and became a real Pinterest gem. If you like Boho interiors and you have not pinned a single peacock chair to your board then who are you even?!
Where to buy a peacock chair?
Peacock chairs are still quite hard to find. I believe that the key to finding a beautiful rattan chair is patience – and a lot of searching through flea markets, both in real life and online. I definitely recommend you have a look on Etsy UK and eBay. If you don’t mind that your wicker chair won’t have a vintage charm to it then I can recommend this speacialised wicker chair seller called the World Of Wicker – they are selling all sorts of beautiful rattan peacock chairs from shorter ones which are as cheap as £39 to proper intricate ones with little twist side tables which near the £300 mark. I’m well aware that that’s a hell of a lot money for just a chair but these chairs are a real statement pieces and will completely transform the landscape of your home. You can get lucky and find a vintage deal on said eBay for an absolute bargain though – I found mine on Czech eBay for £20 including the little twist table AND postage, what!
How to style a peacock chair?
The best part about peacock chairs is that they are so easy to style – you can proper them just about anywhere in your home and they’ll look mind-blowingly amazing. I have mine bang on in the middle of my living room (which also means in the middle of my whole apartment)
