How to improve your performance when driving at night

How to improve your performance when driving at night

Read in English only

Driving at night is always much more difficult than in the daytime. Fortunately, thanks to some simple things you can do with your car and the tips for proper driving, you can make the night trip more enjoyable and safe.

Before you hit the road, you should check several parameters of your car.

If you often drive in the dark or you are getting ready for a long trip in your new Toyota rav4 or some other vehicle, take several preventive measures that will ensure an acceptable level of comfort in conditions of poor visibility. Let us consider these measures in more detail.

Adjust the headlights of your car

Over time, the light flux of headlamps becomes somewhat dim and the problem here is not due to the car electronics but to the need for their timely adjustment. Poorly adjusted headlights can blind drivers in the oncoming vehicles causing glare leading to distortion of the real traffic situation thus significantly impairing visibility in conditions of rain or snow.

Adjusting your headlights is a fairly straightforward process since most modern cars are equipped with servomotors allowing you to do it in a couple of minutes straight from the car’s cabin.

Clean the headlights and windshield

Year after year, the glass on your headlights loses its former transparency and there forms a yellow film, which significantly impairs visibility. By doing a regular polishing of your headlamps, you will get a significant increase in the intensity of the light flux passing through them.

You can also get a specialized set of headlight care means in any car shop, or use fine-grained sandpaper, polishing cloth and toothpaste to achieve a similar result. In the case of very dirty headlights, this process will produce a stunning effect.

In addition, you need to pay attention to the cleanliness of your windshield. This may seem like fairly basic advice, if not for the negative impact of even the slightest windshield impurity on visibility in the dark. And it’s not just about the outer side of the windshield but also about the inner one.

Tips for driving at night making driving safer

When driving for quite some time on the country road, you can get into a state when you will simply look at the road blankly while being unable to concentrate. In order to avoid such a situation from happening, you should move your eyes from side to side periodically and focus on the surrounding objects and cars.

The fact that you may be an experienced driver does not yet allow you to exercise excessive self-confidence when driving in the dark. Thus you should increase the distance to the vehicle ahead a little more than you are accustomed to – it not only allows you to avoid a collision in the case of emergency braking but also ensures that you will not dazzle another driver with your headlights.

In conclusion, we hope you find this article helpful. You may also want to discover some of our tips on how to buy a used car in case you are looking for a new vehicle.
