There are many reasons why we choose to live in the city. It’s never because we want to save money on our living expenses. Let’s face it, city centre living carries with it a hefty premium. We pay more in rent and council tax but we’re getting something very special for our money. We’re paying for unrestricted access to a range of awesome food, drink and activities that lie on our doorstep. While all around us we see stressed out-of-towners desperately trawling the streets looking for a parking space, we are able to walk to a host of outstanding amenities at our leisure without needing to worry about paying absurd parking charges or navigating congested streets.
Yet, while we have so much amazing stuff at our disposal, it can be oh-so-tempting to closet ourselves away from the outside world, eschewing the treasures of the city we call home for the allure of the television and a fridge full of snack foods. While the quiet night in has its place, it should be enjoyed as a balanced diet of enriching activities. No matter what your budget, there’s no excuse not to get out there and really experience the city you love. Even wandering around at night can be a lot of fun, but no true urbanite is making the most of the premium they pay for city living unless they…
Get locked in a room with your friends
Brunch with friends is goo. Drinks with friends is even better. But getting locked in a room with your friends and working together to find clues, solve puzzles and eventually get the heck outta there? That’s the adventure of a lifetime! No matter where you live, chances are there’s an Escape Room near you! If you’re looking for something a little out of the ordinary with your significant other, your bestie or a group of friends this is a day out you won’t forget.
Visit a free museum
Most city centre galleries and museums are state subsidised so while your donations are more than welcome (and good form if you’re able) there are many national museums which you will be able to visit for free. You can have wonderful time in a museum, even if it’s dedicated to something that you never thought you were interested in. Stroll amongst incredible works of art or learn about marvels of science, industry and discovery. You’ll have fun, learn something and be able to feel like you’re getting the most out of city centre living.
Go on a walking tour in the city
Very often we don’t have the faintest idea of the cultural, historical and political significance of buildings and landmarks that we walk past on the way to get our Starbucks. Indeed, it’s usually only when friends from out of town visit that we truly get to experience the full gamut of what our city has to offer. Very often we’ll be able to find a walking tour that goes within striking distance of our apartment building and teaches us to look at the unassuming streets we navigate every day with fresh eyes and a renewed sense of appreciation.
