Building your jewellery collection isn’t something that should be done quickly. You might be in a rush to own lots of beautiful pieces to wear, but if you want the ultimate collection (one that will actually mean something to you because you love it) then you need to take your time. Below, we’ll discuss some of the dos and don’ts of building your jewellery collection so that you can end up with pieces that speak to you and make you feel amazing.
Do splash out on staples
If something is going to be a staple in your collection, then it’s a good idea to splash out on it. Buying a high quality material that will last is going to save you money in the long run, and you’ll get a lot of use out of it, so the purchase is warranted. For example, a nice dainty necklace that you know will go with everything is always worth a little more money. Make a small list of things you like to wear regularly and then find pieces that fit the bill.
Don’t spend good money on something you won’t wear often enough
If you know you’re not going to wear something often enough, don’t buy it – unless you have hundreds and thousands of dollars to burn. It isn’t an investment piece if you’re only going to wear it once in a blue moon. You will usually be able to find something similar for a more reasonable price, maybe even as costume jewellery. It can be a good idea to find a cheaper version of a piece you like to see how much you’ll wear it. You might even surprise yourself by wearing it more than you thought, and then you can warrant the extra expense.
Do choose jewellery that reflects your personality and style
Knowing your personality and style is the best way to build your jewellery collection. If you don’t like to be the center of attention, then you’re not going to want a lot of colorful ‘out there’ pieces. Handmade jewellery can definitely express something individual about your style, so this is worth looking into if you’d like a unique bracelet, ring, or necklace to be made for you. Taking your lifestyle into account is also important – you probably won’t want super heavy, clunky jewellery if you spend a lot of time typing on a computer – imagine the noise as you type!
Don’t be afraid to experiment
Never be afraid to experiment with your pieces. Mixing metals is a nice way to start – don’t listen to anybody who says you shouldn’t! You’ll probably have a preferred metal, but this doesn’t mean you can’t have fun with your collection.
Do bring back souvenirs from places you visit
When you go somewhere new, head to markets and stores to see if you can find something to add to your collection. This can bring color and a different style element to your look.
Don’t ever clear out your jewellery
Something you haven’t worn for a while could easily come back into fashion in a few years. You’ll regret getting rid of sentimental pieces especially!
