Tips to prepare yourself for a hospital stay

There may come a time in everyone’s life where they need to go into hospital. Perhaps it’s to have their first child or to have a medical procedure. Whatever it may be, here are some tips to prepare yourself for a hospital stay.

Pack comfortable clothes

When it comes to hospital stays, you’re not likely to have the nicest of clothing to wear. You are like to get a nightgown, perhaps some socks and if you’re lucky, a dressing gown. To help you feel more like yourself, it’s a good idea to do an overnight bag or a suitcase depending on how long you intend to say. It’s good to have someone to help you out unpacking your clothes so that you can stick to a regular routine of getting changed into fresh clothes every day or two. Comfortable clothes are going to be the best for you and being able to move about. So find clothes that are stretchy like joggers and basic baggy tops that are going to keep you warm but will also provide plenty of extra room for anything that needs to be applied to your body.

Bring your home comforts

Even the best hospitals like Weymouth Street Hospital are going to try and give you the best treatment and care, but it will never feel like being at home in your own bed when you’re recovering. If you’ve got time to prepare, it might be worth bringing a few home comforts to remind you of home and to stop you from being homesick during your stay. This might be your favourite snacks or your pillow that you sleep on in bed. Perhaps you want to bring along a framed picture of a family member or friend. Whatever it is that makes you feel more at home, and comfortable is important. The hospital you stay at isn’t going to stop you from bringing this stuff in. As long as it’s not going to get in the way of them treating you, that’s all that matters.

Be sure to take some entertainment with you too to curb that boredom.

Take plenty of snacks

Snacks are essential for making your stay in a hospital that little more bearable. Like plane food, hospital food isn’t going to be your typical fine-dining experience. You’re not really going to get much of choice in what you eat, so it might be worth you bringing in some extra snacks to keep you going and to help with any times where you might be struggling to eat what they give you. It’s important that you’re keeping your energy levels up so as long as it’s not doing any further damage to your body, they’ll be encouraging you to eat it, rather than taking it away from you. 

Have friends and family visit

And finally, don’t forget to schedule in some time for family and friends to visit. The more company you can have during the course of your stay, the easier it will be!

Remember that the stay won’t be forever and to be well prepared.
