5 top tips for women to look after their eyesight

5 top tips for women to look after their eyesight

Most people tend to take their eyesight for granted. If you can see well enough and don’t need glasses, why worry? But imagine a life with poor eyesight. Or worse, no vision at all. Reading, watching movies, playing sports, and seeing your loved ones would all be affected. Whatever the current state of your eyes, your sight is one of the most critical aspects of your wellbeing. It should be looked after with the care it deserves. Many people have poor habits when it comes to their eyesight, which, if unchecked, could lead to serious problems down the line.

So if you’re rightfully concerned about protecting your eyesight, here are some tips to help you care for your eyes.

Check your eye makeup

Most women use the same mascara until it runs out, sometimes stretching out its use for years. But this is a terrible habit to get into. You’re probably not aware that your cosmetics are an ideal breeding ground for bacteria. Medical experts recommend discarding your mascara and eye shadow after three months to prevent the build-up of nasty microorganisms that cause unpleasant eye infections and do lasting damage. A helpful way to know if your makeup has gone off is to smell it. Similarly to food, bacteria-ridden mascara will give off a particularly bad odor, and you will know it’s time to throw it away.

Take a break from the screen

If you work on a computer or spend a lot of time on your phone, you are inflicting a great deal of harm to your eyes. Staring at harshly-lit screens for long periods causes eye strain and will gradually worsen your vision. Limit the amount of time you spend using technology and divert your attention to more eye-friendly activities like exercise or listening to music. If looking at screens is essential for work, take regular breaks every fifteen minutes to look out of the window and give your overworking eyes a rest.

Wear eye protection

You may think that eye protection is only for builders and factory workers, but chances are, your life is full of activities that put your eyes at risk. Basic household jobs like painting and gardening can bring up dust, dirt, and other small particles that get into your eyes and cause irritation and infection. Your new Ray Ban glasses may look great on you, but they won’t do much to protect you from injury. Invest in some protective eyewear instead. Being careless about the sun is another easy way to cause harm to your eyesight. Always wear UV-blocking sunglasses when out in bright light.

Eat well

A healthy diet will provide you with the right nutrients to protect you from health conditions that affect the eyes. Ailments like cataracts and macular degeneration are all related to our overall health, so eating a more balanced diet filled with omega-3, vitamin C, and zinc will help to preserve your vision.

Get checked regularly

The best way to protect your sight is to get regularly checked by an eye doctor. They will be able to give your eyes a check-up and identify any problems before they become too severe.
